I’ve been making Art since I was a kid, which is a very long time ago. I was an architect for many years. Interesting work, but Art allows the creativity to flow much easier. I love making narrative work that allows me to record the stories of people unable to find their own voice. I hope I will never find myself asleep or deaf to the compelling stories all around.
My current body of work is called “Peek Experience”. It reflects years of pilgrimages to sacred places in Asia, and how those images stay with me. When I work on my art, I’m transported through those memories…mountain temples, monks chanting, air thick with incense. The form and spiritual impact of Asian architecture fascinate both the architect and seeker within me.
My narrative work uses a visual vocabulary that includes roses that remind me of two dear, old friends; Buddhist begging bowls for giving and receiving; books that record stories from the people I work with at a shelter in Belltown; and writing from my journals. Hopefully it will provide a mirror for viewers to reflect their own thoughts.
Technically, I use many clay bodies and kiln temperatures. I make the objects separately, then assemble them into a piece. The roses are Raku; the bowls are lustered earthenware; the books are porcelain or paperclay with glaze, acrylic paint and patina. And sometimes there are some found objects or collage work of handmade papers included. |
