At night, I am often overwhelmed
by a sudden visual “show” that seems to commence
at the very moment when I close my eyes to sleep. I see
color combinations and pattern displays changing moment
to moment, presentation style, as I attempt to drift off.
Sometimes I turn the light back on to jot down a description
of what I’ve seen, but like in dreams, the visual
information transforms and then slips away as I attempt
to pin it down. As is also true in dreams, I am left with
a vague sense of a quite profound experience.
In my studio, my goal is to do the best I can to bring
the world I’ve experienced behind my eyelids at
night to my artwork. In attempting to do that, I learn
a lot about what I can and can’t control in my
creative process. I have many happy surprises and even
the occasional experience of having hit the mark.
I am a painter by formal training, but in the past
decade I’ve been using etching inks and an etching
press to create monotypes, which are essentially paintings
transferred from a metal plate onto paper. I also use
Beeswax (encaustic) with pigment as a painting medium,
often in combination with my prints.
