I am captivated by vitreous enamel, the color, brilliance and transparency, the glow, the intimacy, the expressive quality of the wire in the cloisonne technique and the versatility of the medium. Where do my ideas come from? Everywhere. I experience an event, react to it and begin to think about how I can communicate my feelings visually. I see something, the bark of a tree, the texture of a feather and I start wondering how to create that in enamel. I hear a phrase, a few words, and they conjure up visual images. Each piece presents new challenges in design and technique. It is the working through of these challenges that excites me. As I start each piece I have high hopes that this one will be "the perfect piece". It never is, but each one brings me a little closer. Enameling is as necessary to my life as eating chocolate, listening to music, petting cats and dogs, cross country skiing and watching flowers come into bloom.
